Case Study: Installation of a PAVA System in a Bowling Alley

The project involved installing the Infinitus Voice Public Address and Voice Alarm (PAVA) system from Illumino Ignis at a London Bowling venue. The goal was to design and implement an effective evacuation system that would meet safety regulations while also optimising space and value for the client.

The existing system was failing, and we had to replace the front end whilst utilising the existing speakers.

Challenges Faced by our client:

1.        System Size and Space Constraints:

The existing system was too large to be efficiently accommodated in the space provided. The equipment in place included 600-watt amplifiers with six speaker lines on  multiple zones. The rack for this system was housed in the landlord's comms room, which was not ideal due to accessibility issues. It was recommended to relocate the rack into the tenant's area for easier access and management.

2.        Optimising the PAVA System:

The system had no fire microphone installed and was primarily intended for evacuation purposes. Therefore, the challenge was to find a solution that would be both space-saving and functional while being easy to maintain and service. Moreover, space was a premium in the area, and the installation needed to avoid occupying valuable floor space.

Solution

To address the challenges, two options were provided to the customer:

1.        One Infinitus Impact System in a rack

2.        Two Infinitus Compact Systems

The decision was to install two compact PAVA Wall Mounted systems, which was based on a few key factors:

- Value Engineering: The compact systems provided a cost-effective solution compared to larger systems.

- Space Optimisation: By opting for Infinitus Compact models, one system was installed in the tenant’s area, while the other was placed out in the field, hidden from view. This allowed both systems to be mounted on the wall, freeing up floor space and ensuring that the equipment did not interfere with day-to-day operations.

Installation Process

The system installation required collaborative efforts from both the engineering and project management teams. Illumino Ignis’ PA VA Sales Manager Richard, and PA VA Specialist Pat, were tasked with advising on the materials suitable for replacing the existing rack. The goal was to ensure that the new system would be robust enough to meet the operational needs of the venue while being easy to manage.

The two units were both up on the wall and installed within a day, including networking them together.

Outcome

The project successfully addressed the challenges of limited space and system efficiency by utilising two compact PAVA systems. This solution provided the customer with a cost-effective and space-saving setup that met the required evacuation system standards.

The relocation of the rack to the tenant’s area further enhanced the system’s accessibility and ease of management. The careful planning and collaboration between the teams ensured the smooth installation and commissioning of the system, providing a reliable and practical solution for the bowling alley.

This case illustrates the importance of tailored solutions in PAVA system installations, particularly in environments where space and operational efficiency are critical.
